"The legendary series returns"
- by Liam Doolan
After releasing on PC earlier this year, Ubisoft has finally rolled out the console version of The Settlers: New Allies for all platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
As previously noted, this is the latest entry in the classic RTS series which also happens to reboot the entire series. Players can look forward to 13 campaign missions, 13 skirmish maps for multiplayer (PvP and PvE), and a hardcore mode for an extra challenge.
The standard edition will set you back $59.99 USD (or your regional equivalent) and the deluxe edition (containing various extra digital goodies) is priced at $79.99. Here's a bit more about it, courtesy of the PR:
"Developed by Ubisoft Düsseldorf, The Settlers®: New Allies is a modern take on the long-established The Settlers’ franchise, combining elaborate infrastructure and economic gameplay with tactical real-time battles. Starting with a small group of Settlers, players must explore their surroundings, build up their settlements and optimize resource production to recruit new settlers and an army able to protect their land. Researching economic and military upgrades is critical to create a strong army and overcome rivals."
On Switch, the download of this game will require around 6.7GB of free space. As for console-specific features, players can look forward to "a comprehensive input scheme", full cross-play and cross-progression between all platforms, and the ability to invite friends through Ubisoft Connect.
Unfortunately, there are some minor technical setbacks in the Nintendo Switch version of the game:
- When disconnecting from a Multiplayer match, players on Nintendo Switch will not be able to reconnect.
- Connecting Residences will not show a visual connection between the buildings (archways, etc.). This does not affect gameplay.
- In 4vs4 Skirmish matches all players will be limited to 250 unites (down from 500).
Will you be trying this one out on the Nintendo Switch? Tell us below.

I was interested a little to see this but then closed off the eshop page as soon as I saw all the MTX currency for it. Glad it is so easy to pass on Ubisoft games these days.

I’d love to support Ubisoft on releasing new games on the Switch (or porting something current gen instead of X360/PS3 era ports or remasters,) but The Settlers isn’t my cup of tea. Probably will try it out if it goes on a deep sale.

I enjoyed the originals back on Pc. I swear RTS is no where near as good as it was in the early 2000s. Shame. Saw on Pure Xbox where this reviewed poorly on pc, so I’m guessing it’s not much better here.
Truly is a shame RTS is such an unfilled market nowdays, and those that are on offer tend to be blah.

@XenoShaun what do you mean by MTX currency?

Saw it first thing last morning and immediately bought it. I've been playing Northgard so much every year since it released because I grew up on the Age of Empire series and that's the only game that came close.
After the announcement of Settlers a while back I put it on my list and waited patiently to see some gameplay and fell immediately in love.
What a beautiful and fun game. I can't wait for this to be one of those games I come back to every half year or so.
It's true that the houses don't connect and I wish they did because a big part of the enjoyment for me is the look of building a tiny town.
As far as I can tell every building in the game has slight variations of it so every town you build is gonna look slightly different.
And apart from textures constantly loading in (which seems annoying but isn't that difficult to overlook after a while) this game is truly beautiful, deep and fun.

@ToDaisy are you playing it on the Switch? Does the performance seem ok?

@Dm9982 I'll never forget discovering Command & Conquer when it was bundled with a new PC that my parents bought. I spent many happy hours in the company of that game and its various sequels.
@MarioBrickLayer I think they're referring to "micro transactions": https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microtransaction

@presenttense yes I'm playing on the Switch and apart from the game loading in textures here and then when you zoom in and out to make the game look as pretty as possible at all times. The performance is outstanding. No lag. Loading times are always under 20 seconds. It's very impressive for how good it look. Even if sometimes the worker's arms look a little stiff. I'm honestly having the best time.

@ToDaisy This gives me hope that it’s good! Gonna wait for a sale, or break in releases. Just picked up Ghost Trick and Rain Code, so I’m broke atm.
@KnightofNi_ So true!
@LieutenantPete I never got into C&C on Pc, but I had a blast with it on 360. Was done really well on console and proved RTS could work on consoles!

@Dm9982 haha. Yea I feel that. It's a hearty price. If you love RTS it's definitely worth it. If you're a casual fan then a sale definitely won't hurt.

@N8tiveT3ch I must say it does look great, I checked out footage of railway empires 2 a week or so back and that looked very rough, was expecting this to be similar but was very pleasantly surprised

I loved the original Settlers games so would love to give this a try if it had positive reviews, but not at that price.

I was a huge Settlers III fan back in the day. I've been following this new game as it came out on PC a while back... to not very good reviews unfortunately From what I hear, it's not much fun and has lost the original Settlers essence. But I hope they're wrong as I want to love this!

@LieutenantPete I hope that's wrong!! How could you put micro transactions into Settlers?!

@ToDaisy Thank you so much for that! I loved the original settlers games so you've got me excited for this one now

@LieutenantPete @MarioBrickLayer Yes microtransactions. If you check the store page for the game there is a ton of it for its own fake currency plastered near the bottom of the page. As usual no information on the store page itself what any of it is for or required for but yeah that put me right off. Especially with it being a full priced game to boot.

don't settlers fans hate this?
I wanted to get into the series but apparently this game is terrible.

I don't know if I'd call it "legendary..." Feel like that title's reserved for a lil more prestige and respect than this.

@ToDaisy Yeah I’d def call myself casual RTS fan at this point. I use to love and play the hell out of StarCraft, Warcraft, Age, etc. I still haven’t gotten around to playing Northgard though I’ve owned it since about 6 months after it launched.
I love the building up a city/base from nothing and researching my way to supreme dominance and tech.
I use to love to play the custom maps on SC/WC3 like Burbenog TD on WC3, or the 9 way mini base on SC1 where you either had to rush and claim or turtle and slow siege around you so nothing could set up in nearby bases. Lol
And while not RTS, Civ 6 is one of my most played Switch games. Diablo 2, MHGen, MHR, BotW and Witcher hold my top spots above that tho.

Followed this since it was announced. I'm a bigger fan of the older games. This game is really only a Settlers game in name only. They really pushed the IP to the RTS side vs what you might calla real time supply chain game (it's always been a bit of a mixed genre). Basically the long time fans aren't happy with this game. The dev team fully ignored feedback. They built the game they wanted vs the kind of game that long time fans wanted. It really feels like this should have just been a new IP with the change in focus of what the game ended up being. Newer players that aren't as familiar with the old games may have a different POV, and honestly those are probably who Ubisoft is targeting. If this ends up on deep sale I may try to pick it up. But, off-the-cuff, this is not a Settlers game I'm interested it.

@EVIL-C It was announced a while ago, press got their hand on early presentations and were unimpressed.
Then the game was basically shadow dropped... And it's apparently mediocre. Not the glorious franchise return everyone hoped for.

@SmaggTheSmug Wow, that's very sad. 😔 Ubisoft continues to disappoint. Thanks for that info.
